When healing from a wound, proper hygiene is critical to prevent infection and complications. One of the most overlooked risks? Pets.

Believe it or not, many patients have admitted to letting their pets come into contact with their wounds. Whether it’s a dog licking the wound or a cat brushing against it, this is a major health risk. Pet contact introduces harmful bacteria and dramatically increases the chances of infection. It is absolutely essential to keep pets away from any open wound.

In addition to avoiding pets, there are a few more activities to stay away from during wound recovery:

  • No baths: Soaking can introduce bacteria and disrupt the healing environment.
  • No pool time: Pools may seem clean, but they are filled with bacteria that can harm open wounds.
  • No beach trips: Sand, salt water, and sun exposure can all irritate and infect wounds.

Wound care is all about creating a clean, stable environment for the body to heal. Be cautious, be consistent, and when in doubt, follow expert advice.
