Did you know that a red rash on the lower legs can be an early sign that a venous ulcer is on the way? Many people confuse this rash with a common skin irritation or dermatitis, but it’s actually the body’s way of signaling a more serious vascular issue.

This red rash is known as stasis dermatitis. It occurs when the pressure in the veins of your legs increases, causing proteins and red blood cells to leak into the surrounding tissue. Because red blood cells are rich in color, their presence in the tissue creates a scattered, pinpoint red rash across the skin.

Over time, as this condition progresses, the red rash darkens. Blood that initially appears bright red breaks down and stains the skin, turning it dark purple, brown, and even black. This discoloration is the result of hemosiderin, an iron-based pigment found in red blood cells.

Stasis dermatitis is a major warning sign of chronic venous insufficiency and should not be ignored. Early intervention can prevent the development of painful and difficult-to-heal venous ulcers.
